August 13 and 14
Weekend Workshop $275
1 day $140
Judging a Book by it’s Cover
Sat. August 13th
This class is for those who journal or those that want to begin journaling (or making a special handmade book to use as a scrapbook or anything your heart desires). You will leave class with a special hand made book filled with pages waiting to be used. We’ll start the day by making our own paper using guided steps in collage, watercoloring, acrylic paints, doodles, stamps etc. Once we have created our one of a kind paper, we’ll use it to cover artist boards thus making our book cover. Then we’ll bind our book by sewing in watercolor pages. We will explore and play with all different supplies while preparing the pages inside. I will bring all my favorite journaling mediums so you can push yourself (or jump in if you need a starting place) to find new ideas within yourself and add depth to your existing techniques. We will touch on water colors, liquid acrylics, crayons, special pens, wax, attachments, collage, etc. etc. This class is about creating the book and giving some pages inside background layers, but not about the journal pages themselves, that’s Sunday’s class! At the end of the day, you will have a beautiful, handmade journal that’s ready to begin playing on the inside pages!.
Supplies
2 9”x12” canvas panels (those thin boards with a canvas cover-don’t pay for archival quality)
Water color paper ( I HIGHLY recommend fabriano artistico 140 lb. hot press
Torn or cut to size – approximately 11” x 17 “ 12 to 18 pieces. (if buying the large sheets of paper you usually get 3 this size with a little extra watercolor paper for a smaller book per sheet- Danielsmith.com
Needle (size 18 tapestry) for sewing our pages into our books
Awl – if you already have one, if not, we’ll share
Piece of velvet ribbon or heavier material or special paper to cover (finish off) exterior binding –I use wallpaper
Scissors
Adhesives (glue stick, perfect paper adhesive, tombo roller, or gel medium, whatever you prefer to work with on your journal pages)
A few of your favorite markers, crayons, pencils, pens that you already have
A few stamps that you like, if you have them and 1 or 2 ink pads
Some favorite images, clip art material, photographs, words from old books, ephemera or other papers for collage on our specially created book cover paper
3 pieces of any 9 or 10”x 12 or 13” paper to use as endpapers (interior cover) and on back cover
a couple water color tubes in favorite colors (danielsmith.com or dickblick.com or local art store) if you have these
a couple liquid acrylics in favorite colors (I like Goldens that you can get at Micheal’s or Dick Blick)
a few paintbrushes with different size brushes (not foam )
a little mixing tray for colors and glazes etc. works great
I will provide wax linen thread, linen bookbinding tape, paper for our created paper cover, papers to share
a word about not bringing too much stuff. Don’t overwhelm yourself. I will bring supplies to share, and art journalers are known for their generosity with their own supplies. Just bring a few basics and favorite art supplies and we’ll go from there.
Inside Page Play
Sunday August 14th
Now that we’ve got a special art journal, the real fun begins…ART JOURNALING!
We’ll spend a lovely day indulging our desire to express ourselves on the page. I’ll bring lots of my journals for you to peruse and ask me any questions you may have about how I journal, from approaching a blank page, to favorite supplies, prompts, lettering, you name it. If I do it in my visual journals, this is the day we’ll cover it all, all while journaling alongside each other. I’ll show you how I use those favorite supplies, share them with you, and encourage you to push yourself and try new things.
Supplies needed:
A journal! Hopefully one with the ability (water color paper) to hold up to watercoloring, liquid acrylic painting, glues, etc. HOPEFULLY, it’ll be your special book that we made in Saturday’s class. J
